CENTRO DE ARTES E OFÍCIOS ::: ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER

Este projecto é o resultado das sucessivas residências desenvolvidas em Cabo Verde por membros da Associação na região de Trás di Munti, na ilha de Santiago – Cabo Verde. O seu envolvimento com projectos de reabilitação na área das técnicas tradicionais de produção artística (cerâmica, cestaria e panaria) favoreceu social e economicamente o ressurgir destas actividades, que em muito contribuem para a manutenção e afirmação da identidade cultural local, e abriu portas para uma intervenção estruturada e sustentável no tempo e no espaço.
Assim, em Janeiro de 2009 foi criado o Centro de Artes e Ofícios – Centro Interpretativo do Lugar (CAO), no abandonado edifício da Cooperativa de Trás di Munti. Este Centro, ao abrigo legal do Município do Tarrafal, permite garantir a continuidade do trabalho dos mestres artesãos, oferecendo-lhes infra-estruturas adequadas ao trabalho, e inicia um laço entre a produção artística local e a autarquia e o governo cabo-verdiano. O CAO cumpre assim um importante papel de valorização patrimonial, de apoio à produção artesanal e de dinamização turística. A longo prazo, o CAO responde ao objectivo de contribuir para o desenvolvimento da comunidade numa perspectiva sustentável e ecológica. Poderá albergar diversas acções de formação no âmbito das artes tradicionais, assim como no âmbito das tecnologias ecológicas da agricultura, pesca e pecuária. Poderá também acolher projectos de investigação nos domínios das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Geografia, Geologia e Arte, e dinamizar actividades turísticas ligadas ao património natural.

A partir do CAO foi criada a Loja da Terra, no mercado municipal do Tarrafal, onde se comercializam os produtos da região de Trás di Munti. Esta loja é um ponto de contacto fundamental, onde podem ser marcadas as visitas às oficinas dos artesãos e ao CAO, garantindo o escoamento dos seus produtos e a promoção turística da região.

O CAO é composto pelas seguintes valências:
a)   Zona do Posto de Venda: alberga uma pequena exposição e venda dos produtos produzidos pelos artesãos locais. É sobretudo uma zona de atendimento ao público – espaço de recepção – onde os visitantes podem dirigir-se para obter informações sobre o Centro, adquirir peças e produtos de artesanato local, receber o acompanhamento de guias que efectuam visitas ao espaço do Centro e também a circuitos de interesse patrimonial e paisagístico situados na região como a Igreja de São José, Baía da Angra, Ribeira do Lobrão ou Baía do Medronho.
b)   Espaço Museológico: o museu – Centro Interpretativo do Lugar – encontra-se implementado na sala anexa ao posto de venda. O conteúdo do museu pretende constituir uma fonte de informação directa para quem o visita, exibindo painéis onde textos informativos se cruzam com imagens fotográficas, ensinando e elucidando os visitantes quer sobre a história das artes tradicionais e métodos de produção, quer sobre artífices e povoações, expondo peças antigas e ferramentas utilizadas nos processos de produção.
c)    Espaço Multiusos / Oficina de Multimédia e Comunicação: este espaço tem capacidade para quinze alunos e respectivo professor, sendo servido por um quadro, armários para arrumação e arquivo, mesas, secretárias e cadeiras. As reuniões de grupos de trabalho de carácter formativo ou administrativo efectuam-se dentro do espaço da sala Multiusos. No final do ano de 2010 esta sala albergará também uma Oficina Multimédia e Comunicação, apetrechada com equipamento útil à promoção e divulgação do Centro.
d)   Oficina de Artesanato: a olaria e a cestaria usufruem deste espaço trabalhar, armazenar matérias-primas, guardar instrumentos de trabalho e parte dos produtos já finalizados ou em fase adiantada de produção (como peças de olaria já modeladas em fase prévia de secagem para cozedura final no forno comunitário). A oficina é especialmente útil para as oleiras que necessitam de um maior resguardo contra elementos da natureza como o vento.
e)    Pátio Exterior com zona de sombra: espaço ao ar livre com uma área coberta de sombra de aproximadamente 100m2 onde os artesãos podem trabalhar livremente. Dispõe de mesas e bancadas de trabalho assim como de bancos e cadeiras que conferem maior comodidade a quem trabalha e permitem ao visitante permanecer mais tempo no local. Está prevista, para esse efeito, a criação de uma pequena esplanada com um serviço de bar.
f)    Cozinha: a cozinha cumpre um importante papel de apoio aos programas de formação que se desenvolvem no Centro, permitindo a preparação de comidas e bebidas. Está equipada com frigorífico e fogão a gás, bem como de todos os utensílios necessários, e está acessível a toda a comunidade de artesãos.

This project is the result of successive residencies developed in Cape Verde by members of the Association in the region of Trás di Munti, in Santiago Island – Cape Verde. Their involvement with rehabilitation projects in the area of the traditional techniques of artistic production (ceramic, basketry and bakery) has favoured the reappearance of these activities at a social and economical level, which have further contributed for the maintenance and affirmation of local cultural identity and opened doors for a structured intervention as well as sustainable in space and time.

Thus, in January of 2009 the Centro de Artes e Ofícios – Centro Interpretativo do Lugar (CAO) [Arts and Crafts Centre – Interpretative Centre of the Place (CAO)] was created in the abandoned building of the Trás di Munti Cooperative. This Centre, legally under the municipality of Tarrafal, guarantees the continuity of the work of master artisans, offering them the proper infrastructures for their work, thus initiating a bond between the local artistic production and the autarchy and the government of Cape Verde. This way, CAO fulfils an important role in the scope of patrimonial heritage, support to the artisanal production and touristic dinamization.  At a long term, CAO answers to the purpose of contributing to the development of the community in a sustainable and ecological perspective. It might shelter several training actions in the scope of traditional arts, as well as in the scope of the ecological technologies of agriculture, fishing and livestock breeding. It might also welcome investigation projects in the areas of social and human sciences, geography, geology and art, and dinamize touristic activities connected to the natural heritage.

In the sequence of CAO we created the Loja da Terra (Earth’s Store) in Tarrafal’s municipal market, where the Trás di Munti’s regional products are commercialized. This store is a fundamental contact point where the visits to CAO and to the artisan’s workshops can be scheduled, thus guaranteeing the flow of their products and the touristic promotion of the region.

CAO is composed by the following valences:

a)     Sales point area: it shelters a small exhibition and sale of the products produced by the local artisans. It is mainly a public reception area where the visitors can go to get information about the centre, acquire pieces and products from the local artisans, be accompanied by guides that perform visits to the space of the centre and also the regional circuits of patrimonial and landscape interest like Igreja de São José, Baía da Angra, Ribeira do Lobrão or Baía do Medronho.

b)    Museological space: the museum – Interpretative Centre of the Place – is implemented in the room next to the sales point. The content of the museum aims to constitute a source of direct information to their visitors, showing panels where informative texts are crossed with photo images, teaching and clarifying the visitors about the history of the traditional arts and production methods, about artisans and villages and exposing old pieces and tools used in the production processes.

c)    Multipurpose Space / Multimedia and Communication Workshop: this space has a capacity for 15 students and a teacher, equipped with a board, closets for storage and filing, tables, desks and chairs. In this room are held the meetings from the training or administrative work groups.  At the end of 2010, this room will also shelter Multimedia and Communication Workshops, equipped in a way that will be useful to the promotion and dissemination of the centre.

d)    Craftmanship Workshop: the pottery and the basketry artisans use this space to work, storage raw material, keep work instruments and a part of the finished products or in an advanced stage of production (like already modelled pottery pieces in a pre-drying stage waiting to undergo the final firing in the community oven).  The workshop is particularly useful for the potters who need more protection against the elements of nature like the wind.

e)     Shaded Outdoor Pateo: Outdoor space with a shaded area of approx. 100 m² where the artisans can work freely. It has work tables and counters as well as chairs and seats that provide more comfort to the workers and that allow the visitor to remain in the place longer. Also for the comfort of the visitors is foreseen a small terrace with bar service.

f)     Kitchen: the kitchen has an important role in supporting the training programmes developed at the Centre, allowing the preparation of food and drinks.  It is prepared with a fridge and a gas stove, as well as with all of the necessary utensils, besides being accessible to the entire community of artisans.
